The Peacekeepers is a visual study of Florida cowboys in Central Florida. These modern day cowboys dress as if they were early Florida settlers living in the 1880s. They meet monthly to compete in mounted shooting contests involving equestrian skills and firing blank ammunition at balloon targets. It’s a sport that balance and great horsemanship. It’s a fascinating sport. I chose to look for the quiet moments - the ruffle of a skirt gliding over a horse, kids wearing boots almost as tall as them, to show the connection both visually and emotionally the Florida cowboys have with the past even before tourists or cities - another Florida. A time capsule of a simpler time and a contrast between the tourist laden, tropical lifestyle, glittery club and party night life scene of Miami, Palm beach and the other resort cities along Florida’s southern coast.
